DJ Khaled – Victory 2010

The release of DJ Khaled's fourth studio album was repeatedly delayed. With each pushed-back street date came a new track list, the biggest change coming when the Shyne feature "All My Life" fell off, and Young Jeezy went from centerpiece artist to two-track contributor. It's a testament then to the DJ's executive production power that the final product not only holds together, but solidly supports the album's theme, offering a fist-pumping song cycle of triumph in the hood. With the five-star lineup of T-Pain, Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, and Rick Ross, "All I Do Is Win" is the gold medal track, with the Young Jeezy showcase "Put Your Hands Up" winning the silver. Bun B ("I got those yams like Thanksgiving dinner") helps "Rockin' All My Chains On" score the bronze, giving the track a slight edge over the hood reggae number "Killing Me," which partners Busta Rhymes with Jamaican stars Buju Banton and Bounty Killer. Through intros and shout-outs, Khaled puts more of himself into this personal, story-telling album, and while this supposedly troubled effort seems complete and sound, for the most part, the closing "Rep My City" is the least satisfying number and is best thought of as a bonus track. Otherwise, the Terror Squad DJ's ode to the victor is as satisfying as his other mega-star-studded albums, with the added benefit of being more cohesive and significantly more purposeful. ~ David Jeffries

Ludacris – Battle Of The Sexes 2010

If it seems odd that an album as bravado-filled, trash-talking, and schoolboy horny as this one comes with the title Battle of the Sexes. It can be explained as a leftover title from what was originally planned as a joint release from Ludacris and his DTP protégé Shawnna. After the album's better half left the project -- along with the DTP family -- the title was never readjusted, and there are further confusing traces of the original concept, such as the "us vs. them" intro, which opens an album that's almost entirely "us." Still, quality control is less important than titillation when it comes to the porno-style album, and Battle of the Sexes delivers on that level. Redd Foxx-like ideas like making limbo instructions sound especially nasty ("How Low") or having fun with the Tiger Woods sex scandal ("Sexting") are coupled with safe and slick beats from the likes of the Runners, Swizz Beatz, and the Legendary Traxster. Luda is inspired enough to drop at least one belly laugh-worthy punch line per track, while the numerous guests are, at worst, on point, and at best (that would be Nicki Minaj), on fire. The less-sexed "Everybody Drunk" barely fits, but it's still a party time highlight, and when you add the very R. Kelly-esque "Sex Room," plus Lil' Kim getting vicious on "Hey Ho," you've got more prime material than expected. Limited and a little patched together, but if cheap thrills are what you're after, this one puts the dirty back in dirty south. ~ David Jeffries

Gorillaz – Plastic Beach 2010

Gorillaz began as a lark but turned serious once it became Damon Albarn's primary creative outlet following the slow dissolve of Blur. Delivered five years after the delicate whimsical melancholy of 2005's Demon Days, Plastic Beach is an explicit sequel to its predecessor, its story line roughly picking up in the dystopian future where the last album left off, its music offering a grand, big-budget expansion of Demon Days, spinning off its cameo-crammed blueprint. Traces of Albarn's Monkey opera can be heard, particularly in the hypnotic Mideastern pulse of "White Flag," but Damon's painstaking pancultural pop junk-mining no longer surprises -- when hip-hop juts up against Brit-pop, it's expected -- yet it still has the capacity to delight no matter which direction the Gorillaz may swing. Lou Reed's crotchety croak on "Some Kind of Nature" has the same kind of gravitational pull as Mos Def leading the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble through the intensely circling "Sweepstakes," while the group reaches new heights of sparkling pop on "Superfast Jellyfish," aided by the return of De La Soul -- the rappers who propelled "Feel Good Inc." -- and an appearance from Gruff Rhys, the Super Furry Animals frontman who is an ideal fit for Gorillaz (possibly because SFA's genre-bending pop and Pete Fowler artwork clearly paved the way for Albarn and Jamie Hewlett's collaboration). A common thread among all these tracks is that they find Albarn ceding the spotlight to his fellow musicians, preferring to be the puppetmaster behind the curtain, and Plastic Beach works best when he's the composer and producer, finding hidden strengths within his guests -- having Mick Jones and Paul Simonon for the elastic title track, coaxing some powerful performances out of Bobby Womack -- but often when Albarn takes center stage his laconic drawl lets the air out of the balloon. Curiously, much of this arrives toward the beginning of the album, the record gaining momentum as it unspools, working toward its climax, but the overall album accentuates moody texture over pop hooks. This emphasis means Plastic Beach is the first Gorillaz album to play like a soundtrack to a cartoon -- which isn't entirely a bad thing, because as Albarn grows as a composer, he's a master of subtly shifting moods and intricately threaded allusions, often creating richly detailed collages that are miniature marvels. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Jimi Hendrix – Valleys Of Neptune 2010

After 40 years, a number of ill-conceived posthumous albums, and countless bootlegs, one would almost have to be skeptical of a new album billed as "12 previously unreleased studio recordings -- almost 60 minutes of unheard Jimi Hendrix!" The good news is that Valleys of Neptune largely delivers on that promise. Even hardcore collectors will likely be surprised at how much of this album they haven't heard. But much of this material has been available before in some form, official and otherwise. Although there were tons of posthumous overdubs, elements of these very versions of "Stone Free" and "Hear My Train Comin'" were used as building blocks for the versions on Crash Landing and Midnight Lightning, respectively. Additionally, this version of "Stone Free" was included on 2000's The Jimi Hendrix Experience box set, the only difference being that Noel Redding's bass and vocals were replaced with Billy Cox's bass from a slightly later studio session. An excerpt of the tune "Valleys of Neptune" was released as part of the Lifelines radio program box set but that track ("Mr. Bad Luck [aka Look Over Yonder]") and "Lullaby for the Summer" (basically an instrumental version of "Ezy Rider") were all well-known to collectors. However, Eddie Kramer's fresh mixes make them all sound better than ever. "Fire," "Red House," and "Sunshine of Your Love" are obviously well-known tunes, but these versions will most likely be new even to collectors. "Ships Passing Through the Night" (later transformed into "Night Bird Flying") and "Crying Blue Rain" are easily the rarest tracks here, and may well be surfacing for the very first time. The songs all sound mostly to completely finished; they definitely aren't just rough demos that got added to after the fact (although Mitch and Noel did do additional recording in 1987 for three of these tunes). Most of the tracks have multiple guitar parts, although Jimi probably would have replaced some of these guitar parts. It's not that they're at all bad, but some aren't perfect, and Jimi Hendrix was a perfectionist. "Crying Blue Rain" feels like just a studio jam (albeit a good one), and "Sunshine of Your Love" goes on just a bit too long with an unnecessary bass solo, but the rest sounds surprisingly finished and complete (and being studio recordings, the sound quality is excellent throughout).

Four Year Strong – Enemy Of The World 2010

Following up on Explains It All, an album of ‘90s covers, Four Year Strong return to the crossroads of emo and pop-punk with their second album of original material, Enemy of the World. The Worcester, MA quintet’s sound remains largely unchanged, with their combination of pop-punk energy, uplifting singalong choruses, and metalcore flourishes. There’s not a lot in the way of innovation here, but there doesn’t really need to be. Four Year Strong has stumbled upon a sound that takes the catchiest elements from three different genres and bundles them up in a high-energy package that’s undeniably catchy. Alone, these styles have almost been done to death. By mixing them together, the band has created a dynamic sound that keeps the listener on their toes as they effortlessly shift from hardcore breakdowns to sweeping, half-time choruses. On “It Must Really Suck to Be Four Year Strong,” the album opener and first single, the song shifts back and forth easily from metalcore chugging to driving, major-key passages that invite you to join in and help out with the vocal duties. Jampacked with hooks and gang vocals, the rest of the album follows along those same lines, showing off the talents of a band of tight and consistent musicians and songwriters who’ve taken a wide range of styles and combined them into something that is all their own.
